Betweens
Betweens is the home spot of many danish surfers. During the late 80´s a small group of locals ventured out into the waves, and 10 years later, others followed. For two decades this break gave birth to a whole generation of Danish surfers.
While the surfers north of Hvide Sande had been surfing shorter boards for years, it wasn´t until 2005 the shortboard really kicked in here. Up until then, the spot was filled with longboarders, and some still hang ten.
The Wave
A few years ago a new larger pier was constructed just south of the old one. During construction, the waves were firing, as the lagune picked up swell from all angles. For a large period of time during construction, there were world-class waves breaking every other day. Like really, really good waves.
But when the last 20-30 meters of the pier was built, the show stopped. The break almost never picks up swell, and when it does, it is mostly a closeout wave. If you want to surf waves, chances are you will be very disappointed.
The local city council is trying hard to find a solution to the problem, as Hvide Sande depends on tourism.
The most obvious thing to do would clearly be, to remove 20 meters of the new pier, and simply use the rocks to stabilize bottom contour and eliminate erosion on the beach- easy and cost-effective.
We will update as soon as we know more.
